The
Wastewater Treatment Facility...
The
Aspen Consolidated Sanitation District Advanced
Wastewater Treatment Facility, located in Aspen,
Colorado, is a 3.0 MGD Conventional Activated
Sludge Facility utilizing Preliminary Treatment
(Automatic Bar Screen and Aerated Grit Removal),
Secondary Treatment (Fine Bubble Diffusion),
Secondary Clarification (Square-circles), Aerobic
Digestion with Centrifuges for solids removal,
Tertiary Treatment (Nitrification Towers,
Polishing Ponds and Rapid Sand Filtration),
Chlorination (Hypo) and Dechlorination (Sulfur
Dioxide). The facility receives its influent from
the City of Aspen, an old mining town of the
1800's turned skiing mecca of the 1990's. The
effluent is discharged into the Roaring Fork
River, a Class I, Cold Water Recreational Fishery
(a tributary to the Colorado River System).
Wastewater influent flows have long been used as
a valuable measurement of the population of
tourists, locals and transient workforce in Aspen
at any given month. For purposes of calculation,
we use 90 gallons per capita per day as the
population equivalent. The national average is
approximately 125 gallons per captia per day. The
smaller number we use takes into account that
tourists and transient workers may use less water
than they would at home because of the numerous
resort activities available to them or that they
are just here to work for the day. For flows and
loads data from 1992 to present click here. Please
see the footnote for a more detailed description
of how to interpret the data presented in the
table. Updates will be done every six months, so
if you require more up-to-date information, just
call or E-mail Tracy
Dillingham.
