| Aspen Consolidated Sanitation District |
| The District's History... Aspen's original sanitation district, The Aspen Sanitation District, was formed in 1955 and consisted of a trickling filter plant within the city, on North Mill Street. This plant was expanded several times until in the early 70's it could no longer meet its discharge permit limitations and had become a odorous neighbor to the blossoming business district. In the late 60's, "a developer's district", The Aspen Metropolitan Sanitation District, was formed to handle the sewage treatment needs of the outlying areas of Aspen. AMSD built a new activated sludge plant on what was referred to as the "hog pasture" directly below the Sardy Ranch (where the current Pitkin County Airport is located). Influent flow to the "old filter plant" was slowly phased out and re-directed to the Metro Plant. In 1984, the two separate districts were merged to form the Aspen Consolidated Sanitation District. |
